Brigitte Knapp was born in Arzl/Pitztal, Austria. In 2004 she completed her Masters
degree in Microbiology at the University of Innsbruck working on the characterization of microbial
succession during a composting process. During the work for her diploma thesis she did a practical
training at the University of Florence (Dipartimento di scienza del suolo e nutrizione delle piante)
to gain insight into the use of different molecular techniques in microbial ecology.
Receiving a research fellowship at the University of Innsbruck she afterwards examined
earthworm-microorganism relationships in alpine ecosystems.
She is currently working on the FWF project “Traceability of compost amendment to soils”,
focusing mainly on Actinomycetes and their importance in the soil microbiota.
